Major Walter Clopton Wingfield came up with this great game of hitting balls across nets with tennis rackets. As opposed to just using your bare hands or feet. This is what people did before he invented what we know now as modern-day tennis.

Tennis was originally played as a pastime. But people began to realize that it could become a competitive game and soon started playing in tournaments. People quickly became interested in tennis because of the intensity and excitement surrounding this new form of entertainment.

Where was tennis invented?

Tennis originated from England where they would play against the wall with their bare hands or feet. Walter Clopton Wingfield created modern-day tennis when he invented rackets during his time at British headquarters in India. His great idea came while watching soldiers hitting balls back and forth over a net using wooden paddles. After realizing how much fun they were having using paddles as opposed to just their bare hands.

Why is it called “tennis” and not “tens”?

It is officially called tennis and not tens. This is because tennis was named after the French word for ten, which is ‘dix’ meaning ‘ten’.

Growth in popularity of tennis

Tennis caught on pretty fast and quickly became a popular sport with both men and women. This was not common during the Visctorian time period. Tennis has become extremely competitive throughout the years. The ITF Global Tennis Report (2019) estimated that a total of 87 million people play tennis around the world. This is approximately 1.17% of the global population.

When was Wimbledon first held?

The first tennis competition was held in 1877, which is now known as the Wimbledon Championships. It began with one player who challenged another to a game of tennis at their club in Worple Road where there used to be this real tennis court that was constructed on land owned by Charles Goodyear who would eventually donate his tennis ball machine when he decided no longer needed it for his own personal use.

Wimbledon’s original location

It all started off near some cottages and then moved across the road before finally settling at its current home where it has been located since 1922 after they built an actual stadium around these grounds. The tournament quickly became popular throughout England and people from all over wanted to participate so they spread it out beyond just London.
